A quick bio:

I grew up in Coldwater, Michigan ( click for map - I hope this link doesn't go stale).  I graduated from Coldwater High School in 1990, and then from the University of Michigan in 1995.  No snickering at 5 years, please - a double-major and a year in France added time to my sentence.

I met my wife Melissa while we were studying in France at Aix-en-Provence.  Five years after our first date, almost to the day, we were married in Chicago.

I started my work life at Andersen Consulting when I graduated from U of M in 1995. June will mark four years with the "Firm", as it is commonly referred to internally.  (Any implied resemblance to the firm described in the book by John Grisham is purely coincidental.)  Overall, the Firm has been a very positive experience.

My interests:

In a word, Systems.  I currently have four computers, and way too many little projects I want to do.  I often find myself split between wanting to improve my current configuration ("Hey, wouldn't it be swell if I implemented dial-on-demand and made one of my boxes a permanent router?") and wanting do some software development ("MP3 encoding , Java, or my own personal OLTP - what do I want learn about first?")

(Thanks to Al Mackey for designing this "cheesy LinuxFox web button".  Hey , I was tired of the damn penguin, ok? BTW, this entire page series was done within the Linux operating system - creating, testing, posting, etc.)

Motorcycles.  I bought my first bike in 1996 for a paltry $300.  It was a 1982 Honda CM450 that needed a brake job, and lots of chain lube.  It ran and I learned to ride.  For a considerably greater sum, I bought a brand new 1997 Honda Magna 750.  I love to ride - I plan to buy more motorcycles in the future.

Scotch.   I don't own lots, but that is largely due to storage considerations.  Here you'll see my list of picks, as well as commentary on the general state of the Scotch whiskey market, and bits and pieces about other fine non-Scotch spirits.

Journal.  Several of my colleagues and friends have started newsletter-type documents about themselves.  You know the kind -  here is what I'm up to, my latest failures and accomplishments, I went to Peru and it was great, etc.  Most of them have followed a sort of computer terminology naming standard that involves one of the quirkier pieces of an OS.  For example, CTRL-ALT-DLT is named after the infamous three finger salute required when MS-DOS locks your computer.  Because I am going to make mine a little more reflective,  I need  to reach back a bit further to the days of the Apple II to name it, and rather optimistically so.   Guru Meditation #1 awaits you...
